How we keep five 12-foot bottles standing on a windy plaza
Wind is the enemy of every outdoor inflatable. Here is how we planned ballast, anchoring and chamber pressure for the Coca-Cola bottle fleet.
Wind loading is the first question we ask on any outdoor job, before size, before print, before price.
For the bottle tour the brief was open city plazas, sometimes for a full week. A 12-foot bottle presents about 60 square feet of sail. In a 30 mph gust that is roughly 300 lb of lateral force on a piece that weighs 68 lb.
The answer is not "more sandbags". It is a stiffer inflatable and better geometry: we run each bottle at a higher internal pressure with a continuous blower, put the anchor points at 30 degrees rather than straight down, and pre-tension the ballast lines so the bottle never gets a running start.
We also inflation-test every outdoor piece in front of a fan bank before it ships. If it wobbles indoors, it fails outdoors.
